One of Rikers Island’s longest-held inmates will finally be sentenced Wednesday — and appearing on the city’s behalf will be a Bronx prosecutor facing an internal probe for alleged misconduct. At six years, seven months and 28 days, Gregory (Grego) Ferguson has the third-longest tenure of any inmate at the troubled jail.
Twelve judges have presided over his long-running case for attempted murder and burglary.
In 2015, a fellow inmate broke his jaw, which didn’t heal properly, he says. Juror's arrest dooms Rikers inmate's bid to vacate conviction Ferguson’s lengthy stay behind bars without a sentence is partially self-inflicted.
“Nobody cares that I’ve been on Rikers for almost seven years now! His sentencing has been adjourned 60 or 70 times because he’s filed so many motions. Among those motions was an effort by Ferguson to have his guilty verdict tossed due to evidence allegedly withheld by Assistant District Attorney David Slott — the same prosecutor under investigation for misconduct in the Pedro Hernandez case.
Slott was removed from the Bronx DA’s trial team last year and moved to its appeals bureau as part of a probe into the dismissed case against Hernandez — an 18-year-old who spent a year in Rikers insisting he was innocent of gun charges.
Slott, along with cops from the 42nd Precinct, has been accused of intimidating witnesses in the Hernandez case and demanding they lie.
But while Slott works on appeals and the probe on the Hernandez case continues, he is still handling one trial: Ferguson’s.
“ADA David Slott has been allowed to remain on my case.
How is this possible especially since I have been arguing to the court about ADA David Slott’(s) misconduct for years?
” Ferguson wrote Bronx Supreme Court Justice Lester Adler.
A spokeswoman for the Bronx district attorney’s office said that the Hernandez probe had nothing to do with the Ferguson case.
