Hong Kong has 292 hotels (at April 2018) with a total of about 79,620 rooms.
However, the tender deadline of November 2011 for Ocean Hotel lapsed with no agreement being reached with tenderers for development of the hotel, required to build and operate the hotel, sharing the profits with Ocean Park, but ownership of the hotel would be surrendered to the park after 30 years.
In January 2013 the park re-invited tenders for the six-floor 495 room hotel on a more favourable basis which resulted in seven bids by the April 2013 deadline.
In May 2014, a HK$4.1 billion tender for Ocean Hotel was awarded to property development company, Capital Court, a subsidiary of Lai Sun Development whose chairman also chairs Hong Kong Tourism Board.
The construction cost is estimated at HK$2.5 billion and the tender is believed to have included a land premium of about HK$1.6 billion.
The 6-storey 495 room hotel, which will be located at the park’s main entrance, will be operated by Marriott International and is expected to be named "The Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriott Hotel".
Construction commenced during the first half of 2014 and the hotel's opening date has been announced as 13th June 2018.
For its second hotel, The Fullerton, which will be located within the park boundary between Po Chung Wan and Tai Shue Wan where its new "Water World" attraction is being developed, Ocean Park has chosen Parkland Hong Kong, a joint venture between Sino Land and Empire Group Holdings which is expected to invest HK billion into the project.
The Fullerton Hotel is planned to have up to 460 rooms and a total floor area of over 430,000 sq ft.
The qualified planning application must be submitted before August 2016 and, if approved, Sino Hotels would be responsible for operation and management of the hotel which is expected to open in 2020.
New World Development's hotel management arm, Rosewood Hotel Group (formerly New World Hospitality) which operates the Rosewood Hotel & Resorts, New World Hotel & Resorts and Pentahotels brands, is developing a luxury hotel on the site of the demolished New World Centre on the harbourside at Salisbury Road in Tsim Sha Tsui.
